I'm having trouble trying to play a free online game on PopCap.com.

Please refer to the troubleshooting tips below for some basic steps that should resolve most issues with our free online games.

Several of our free online games currently work only in Internet Explorer due to the need for an ActiveX control incompatible with other browsers.  Most games work in multiple browsers but will still exhibit better performance in some than others.  If you are having difficulty with your online game performance, we strongly recommend trying alternate browsers.

In order to play the free online games, certain components need to be installed and activated on a computer through its browser. Depending on your computer, the browser you are using, and which games you are trying to play, you may need to install/enable ActiveX or update Flash or Java. If the necessary add-ons are not installed through the computer's Internet browser, our free online games will not operate properly. Please refer to your computer's help articles or your browser's help articles for further help installing and activating these components.

Other possible issues that could cause blocking of our Online games may be firewalls and virus scanners. We recommend you add our site to your list of "Safe" or "Trusted" Sites for your browser, firewall and virus scanners. Please refer to your software's help articles regarding adding safe/trusted sites.

Further instructions on resolving online games issues:

1. Clear your Internet cache.

Clearing your Internet browser cache/cookies can fix many common issues with pages failing to load. Some browser components may need to have their cache cleared as well. We have provided steps for most common browsers here.

We recommend that you also clear the Java cache and temporary Internet files.

Many Internet games and tools use Java to operate. Often, clearing the cache for Java will resolve numerous issues. In order to delete the Java cache, which is different from the browser cache, please follow the steps below.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Double click and open Java.
  4. Select the General tab.
  5. Under Temporary Internet Files, select Settings.
  6. On the window that opens, click Delete Files.
  7. Make sure all boxes are selected, and click OK.

Restarting your computer after following the above steps can also help the performance of the game.

2. Update Flash.

You may need to install or update to the latest version of Adobe Flashplayer.

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If you need assistance installing the latest version of flash, you may find instructions on the page:

3. Installing our ActiveX [PopCap Games Loader].

If you are having trouble playing the free online versions of Bookworm Adventures, Chuzzle, Hammer Heads, Insaniquarium, or Peggle, you may not have our ActiveX control installed/enabled.  Please note, at this time, these games can only be played in Internet Explorer due to the need for the ActiveX component.  When you go to play the game, you may be prompted with a screen that will walk you through step by step on how to install our ActiveX.

If you do not receive the steps to install our ActiveX, you have another option. You should see a yellow drop down box appear near the top of the window asking if you would like to install the PopCap Games Loader, please click this box and select 'Install ActiveX Control'.

Once you have installed our latest ActiveX, your game should begin!  If not, try refreshing the page or closing and relaunching your browser.

4. Enable Java.

Java may need to be enabled in your browser options.

Internet Explorer

  1. Under Tools, select Internet Options.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Set your security level to Medium or lower.
  4. If you have chosen to customize your security settings for the Internet zone, be sure that under the Java heading, "Java permissions" is not set to "Disable Java." Select one of the three safety levels instead. Also be sure that under the Scripting heading, "Scripting of Java Applets" is set to "Enable" or "Prompt".

Google Chrome

  1. Click on the little wrench icon to open the Tools menu.
  2. Click on Under the Hood.
  3. Click the button labelled "Content Settings" in the Privacy section.

If you have a new installation of Windows XP or Internet Explorer 6, you may need to download the Java Virtual Machine from Sun. Please refer to the following link: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html.

5. Security Concerns.

Some antivirus or personal firewall applications incorrectly identify our products as viruses and disrupt or block the software from downloading or registering. Please be assured that products that come from PopCap Games are virus free. We recommend that you visit your AntiVirus Software website for the latest virus definitions to allow the component to load properly.

Bejeweled HTML5

Bejeweled Scoring

Classic Mode Scoring

A single 3-gem match is worth 50 points.

A 4-gem match (which creates a Flame Gem) is worth 100 points.  Detonating a Flame Gem earns 50 points for making the match, 20 points for detonating the Flame Gem, and 20 points per gem destroyed (including the Flame Gem).

A 5-gem match (which creates a Hypercube) is worth 500 points. Detonating a Hypercube earns 50 points for the detonation plus 50 points per gem destroyed.

A T- or L-shaped match (which creates a Star Gem) is worth 150 points. Detonating a Star Gem earns 50 points for the detonation plus 50 points per gem destroyed.

When you make two simultaneous matches, you are awarded 50 per match plus a 50 point bonus, or 150 points in total.

Cascades earn 50 bonus points apiece, increasing by 50 points for each additional cascade. So, a match that creates two cascades would score 50 points (for the 1st match), plus 100 points (50 points for the 2nd match plus 50 cascade points), plus 150 points (50 points for the 3rd match plus 100 cascade points), or 300 points total.

In Classic Mode, all base score values are multiplied by the level number. So, on level 1, points are earned at the base values listed above.  On level 2, points are earned at twice the base levels.  At level 3, points accrue at three times the base values, and so on.

Speed Mode Scoring

Speed Mode features all basic scoring described above multiplied by 5, with one exception: creating Hypercubes scores the same in all modes, 500 points.

In addition, the base value of the Speed Bonus starts at 200 points and is added to the score for a match. Speed Bonuses increase by 100 points each match as long as the Speed Bonus is maintained to a maximum of 1000 points.

The base value of matching a Time Extender is 250 points.

All these values are then multiplied by the current Multiplier value.

How to play Bejeweled!

Welcome to Bejeweled! This new Chrome-exclusive version is written in HTML5 to allow for amazing new graphics and special effects. Enjoy this puzzle classic from PopCap!

The Basics

The goal of Bejeweled is to swap pairs of gems in order to create sets of three or more.

The main game screen is an 8 x 8 grid of gems. Swap gems with adjacent gems to make lines of three. When a match is made, the matched gems disappear, allowing more gems to fall into the board from above. Make matches of 4 or more to create powerful Special Gems. The game ends when you run out of moves (in Classic Mode) or when you run out of time (in Speed Mode).

Controls

Swap gems either by clicking on a gem and dragging it left, right, up or down (no diagonal moves) or by clicking one gem and then clicking on an adjacent gem. Gems can only be moved if the move makes a match.

Unlike in earlier versions of Bejeweled, it is possible to make matches while gems are falling in from previous matches. Use this ability for extra speed!

Special Gems

Making matches of particular types can convert gems into Special Gems.

  • Flame Gems are created by making a line of 4 gems. Flame Gems explode when matched, destroying themselves along with all eight surrounding gems.
  • Hypercubes are created by making a line of 5 gems. Hypercubes can be matched to any adjacent gem regardless of color, in order to destroy all gems of that color on the board.
  • Star Gems are created by making a T- or L-shaped match. Star Gems, when matched, send explosive bolts of energy right, left, up and down, destroying all gems on those lines.
  • Supernova Gems are created by making a line of 6 gems (it's possible!). Create one and match it to see what they do!

Cascades

When you make a match, new gems fall in from above. Sometimes those gems themselves match as soon as they land. This is a cascade, and it counts toward the original match. Cascades can stack; that is, a cascade can trigger another cascade, which can trigger another cascade, and so on.

Hints

To the left of the game board is a Hint button. Clicking it will indicate a match somewhere on the board.  Clicking the Hint button costs you nothing other than time.

Rankings

As you play games, your overall score totals are added to a running total. As you hit certain benchmarks, your overall rank goes up. There are 131 rank levels ranging from Novice to Elder Bejewelian.

Speed mode

Speed mode is a fast-paced mode for power Bejewelers who crave excitement. Speed is a timed mode; the game ends when you run out of time. You can never run out of moves-- matches will always drop in from above.

Speed mode has all the special gems just like Classic mode. However, Speed mode has some additional gameplay features tailored to the Speed experience.

  • Timer Bar: Each Speed mode game starts with one minute on the clock. The Timer Bar above the game board shows how much time you have remaining in your game.
  • Time Gems: As you play, special Time Gems marked with "+5" or "+10" drop into the board. Each Time Gem you match adds seconds to the Time Extension tank under the score display on the upper left corner of the screen. When the Timer Bar reaches zero, the stored time is added back to the Timer Bar allowing you to keep playing. Each time the Time Extender tank empties, unmatched Time Gems turn into Special Gems.
  • Score Multiplier: The Score Multiplier is displayed just below the score in the upper left corner of the screen. It begins at x1, and increases by one each time you empty the Time Extension tank. All moves made are enhanced by the Score Multiplier, so the longer you survive, the higher you push the Multiplier and the bigger your overall score grows.
  • Speed Bonus: If you make matches quickly enough in succession, you will earn a Speed Bonus, which is displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen above your score. The Speed Bonus starts at 200 points and is added to the point total for each match as long as you keep matching quickly enough to maintain the bonus. As you continue to make fast matches, the Speed Bonus increases to a maximum value of 1000 additional points per match. If you falter for too long, the Speed Bonus resets to zero.
  • Blazing Speed: Once you have filled your Speed Bonus to +1000, you unlock the Ignition Meter. Keep making fast matches to fill it and activate Blazing Speed. While Blazing Speed is active, the board pulses orange, and every matched gem acts as a Flame Gem, exploding upon being matched. This is an excellent way to clear large areas of the board and pick up hard-to-get Time Gems.
  • Last Hurrah: When a game is over, you receive the Last Hurrah. During the Last Hurrah, all Special Gems are detonated and added to your final score. Any unmatched Time Gems remaining on the board also add to your final score.

Speed Mode point values are five times those of Classic mode; that is, a basic match scores 50 points in Classic, but 250 points in Speed.
