Close Background Apps to Improve Performance
If apps are crashing, running slowly, or not responding as expected, one useful step is to force-close apps you are not actively using. Every time you launch an app on your iOS device, it remains open in the background so that it will load more quickly next time you need it. However, this adds up over time to a large number of apps running at once, and it can seriously slow down your entire device.
To view all open apps, give your home button a quick double-tap. You should see a bar open at the bottom of the screen with your app icons displayed:

You can swipe your finger right-to-left to scroll through the pages of open apps and select which ones you are least in need of.
Press and hold any app icon to cause them to jiggle:

Tap the minus symbol at the corner of any app icon in order to close that app. You may be surprised how many apps are running in the background at any given time! Closing the ones you don't actively need just now will greatly improve your device's overall speed and responsiveness.
This process does not delete an app from your device! You can launch the closed apps again the next time you need them.
How to Delete and Redownload Apps
If simply closing background apps or turning your device off and back on has not resolved performance issues with an app, the next step we recommend is to delete the app and reinstall it.
Note: deleting an app will also delete progress! Please be sure to backup your data first.
|
|
To delete an app from your iOS device, simply press and hold the app icon until all the icons begin to jiggle, and an x appears at the corner of each icon. Tap the x to delete the app. |
You can then redownload the app through iTunes or the App Store. Only the iTunes backup will also allow you to restore your saved progress.
Bejeweled Blitz on iOS
How do I know whether I am playing offline in the Bejeweled Blitz iOS app?
The current version of Bejeweled Blitz for iOS has a robust offline mode that is almost indistinguishable from online play through Facebook! You can run your Daily Spin, play with up to three Boosts at a time, add Coins...it's just like being online! In fact, it's so much like being online that you might not be sure which is which.
If you are uncertain which mode you're playing in, just look at your leaderboard. In offline mode, your leaderboard is populated exclusively by PopCap characters. You will also see a Login prompt in your leaderboard to remind you that you could connect through Facebook at any time.
May 24, 2013: Is Bejeweled Blitz iOS crashing? Here's a simple fix!
We've heard from a number of players that the latest update to Bejeweled Blitz for iOS is suddenly crashing on launch, and we are happy to say that there is a very easy solution!
It seems that if your Facebook profile is missing a single piece of data, that empty variable can cause Bejeweled Blitz to crash. It will take just a moment to update your Facebook profile to include this missing information, and you can do so either in your browser or through your Facebook app on iOS. After this change is made, simply delete and reinstall Bejeweled Blitz from the App store, and you'll be back to matching gems and detonating hypercubes in no time!
To make the change in your browser:
Go to Facebook and sign in. Click on your name in the upper right corner to view your Timeline. Then click on the About tab.

Look for the Basic Information section on your About page:

Click the Edit button to expand this section:

Yes, the missing data is gender. The game is reaching out to Facebook expecting to find a number of basic details in every Facebook profile, and if one of those is missing, the game doesn't know what to do. Most of the standard details were never optional in the Facebook account creation process, but gender has been in the past, and so some profiles don't have that information. All that is necessary to fix this crashing issue is to select a gender on Facebook. It is not necessary to check the box beside "Show my gender on my timeline." The information can remain invisible publicly, but it simply needs to be there in the background.
Once you've updated your Facebook profile, please delete and reinstall Bejeweled Blitz on your iOS device. (Click here for instructions on deleting an app.)
To make the change in your Facebook app for iOS:

Tap the icon at the upper left corner to open your navigation console. Tap on your own name at the top of the list to access your profile.

On your profile page, tap the Info tab. Look for Basic Information.

In this section, tap the word Gender to open the edit function.

Select Female or Male, then tap Save. It is not necessary to check the box beside "Show my gender on my timeline."
Once you've updated your Facebook profile, please delete and reinstall Bejeweled Blitz on your iOS device. (Click here for instructions on deleting an app.)
This should prevent further crashing of the Bejeweled Blitz app on your iOS device!
Daily Spin FAQ
We love our players, and the Daily Spin is one of the ways we show it! Just by launching the Bejeweled Blitz for iOS app, you can win free Coins with no more effort than a single swipe of a finger.
How often can I spin?
You can play Daily Spin once for free per day. This free Daily Spin is reset at 10pm Pacific Standard Time.
You can also purchase additional spins through iTunes. Simply click GET SPINS after your free Daily Spin!
If you already left that screen, just open the Options menu by tapping on the Up Arrow icon at the bottom of the game's Main Menu:

Then tap the tab labelled Daily Spin:

Then tap GET SPINS to purchase extra spins:

Once you've purchased your additional spins, you will see the count of your remaining spins appear under the button:

Tapping the button will use one spin at a time, and the number will decrease by one with each use.
How do I claim my Coins from my Daily Spin?
Your Coins are awarded automatically.
Can I share my Coins with friends?
At this time, Daily Spin winnings cannot be shared from the iOS app. If you plan to share Coins, you will want to run your Daily Spin through Facebook in your browser rather than on your iOS device.
Error Message: "Blocked App"
When you attempt to connect to Facebook from your game on iOS, do you receive an error message that reads "Blocked App?"

This error message indicates that you have blocked the game within your Facebook account settings. Please visit Facebook in your browser to resolve this issue (official Facebook instructions can be found here, or just continue reading for the steps to take!).

When you launch the game again, you will be able to log into Facebook from the app!
Boosts FAQ
Boosts are special power-ups that you can purchase using Coins. They each last for three games and you can use up to three Boosts at a time.
![]() |
The Mystery Gem boost places a random special gem on the board at the start of the match. Get a headstart on your game off with a flame gem, star gem, or hypercube! |
|
![]() |
Detonator adds a button in the lower left corner of the board that can be pressed to explode all special gems and multipliers at once! This boost can be used once per game. Choose wisely when to detonate!
|
|
![]() |
Scrambler places a button at the lower right corner of the board that can be used to mix up the gems when you're having trouble finding a match! This boost can be used twice per game. |
|
![]() |
The +5 seconds boost adds five seconds to your time. Five seconds can feel like a long time when you are using it to make extra matches and earn more points!
|
|
![]() |
The Bonus Multiplier starts you off with a x2 multiplier gem at the opening of the game. Match it quickly to start reaping the scoring benefits and hurrying toward your next multiplier! |
How do I choose my Boosts?
At the beginning of each game, you will see the Boost Select screen. From here you can see how many Boosts you have remaining from previous purchases, add or remove new Boosts, and add Coins if you don't have enough to use your selected Boosts.
Will my Boosts automatically refill when they're empty?
If your Boosts run out during a session of Bejeweled Blitz, by default they will automatically refill as long as you have enough Coins to pay for them. When you leave and start a new session your Boost selection will not auto-refill from a previous session (same thing if you switch to a different computer, user profile, or Facebook user account).
You can select whether or not you want Boosts to auto-refill on the Options screen. Just click the box to toggle auto-renew on or off.
Trouble connecting to Facebook on Bejeweled Blitz for iOS
Are you having trouble launching Bejeweled Blitz? Does the game start to launch and then immediately disappear? Is there an error message when you attempt to connect to Facebook from the game? Try these steps to get back to the game!
|
|
Apps are updated regularly, and you will be notified of any available updates via the App Store. On your device, if you see something like this, six of your installed apps have updates available for download! |
|
|
Tap the arrow under Play on your leaderboard screen to open the game's options menu.
|
|
|
|
![]() |
|
At the bottom of the options screen is the version number. The current version as of April 10, 2013 is v1.3.2 (605). |
To view all open apps, give your home button a quick double-tap. You should see a bar open at the bottom of the screen with your app icons displayed:

You can swipe your finger right-to-left to scroll through the pages of open apps. Yes, there may literally be pages full of them!

3. Restart Your Device
If you’ve followed the steps above and you still can’t get Bejeweled Blitz to start or you’re still receiving an error when you try to connect to Facebook, try simply restarting your iOS device. Once the device is restarted, try starting Bejeweled Blitz and connecting to Facebook before starting any other applications.
4. Reinstall Bejeweled Blitz
If simply closing background apps or turning your device off and back on has not resolved performance issues with an app, the next step we recommend is to delete the app and reinstall it.
Note: deleting Bejeweled Blitz will also delete offline progress! Please be sure to backup your data first. You will not lose any online progress, as that is stored on our servers and will be recovered when you connect to Facebook.
|
|
Bejeweled Blitz for iOS
The Bejeweled Blitz app is a free iTunes download to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and it comes with 50,000 free Bejeweled Blitz Coins to get you started!
Bejeweled Blitz for iOS puts fewer screen taps than ever between you and your next minute of gem-swapping joy! Okay, it's really just one or two taps fewer than previous versions, but still, those are valuable seconds you can use to run your Daily Spin right there in the app!
What features are included in Bejeweled Blitz for iOS?
First of all, we've got plenty of updates already in the works, so if you don't see your favorite features listed below, don't worry. We want to make this the ultimate Bejeweled Blitz app, so we'll keep adding and improving! But for now, the game features include:
- Daily Spin (yes, right there in the app!)
- Sharing high scores and Rare Gems to Facebook
- Offline mode with full functionality as of version 1.2!
- Your first 50,000 Coins free!
- Coins purchasing through iTunes for fast and easy reloads
- Gorgeous graphics (even on the iPad)!!!
I can't see my Ranks, Levels, and Experience Points in the App!
The game is connecting to Facebook, so don't worry!, your Ranks, Levels, and XP are still accumulating and being recorded. When you next visit Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook, you will see the updated Rank, Level, and XP you've earned while playing on iOS. But rather than waste valuable screen space, we have decided to give you a full-screen game board on your device!
I can't rotate my game to landscape view!
For greater flexibility with future updates, we have at this time removed the landscape option from Bejeweled Blitz. We may look into restoring it in the future, but there is no current plan in place to do so.
What if I already have the original Bejeweled 2+Blitz app?
You will need to download the new app in order to play Bejeweled Blitz. It won't replace the Bejeweled 2+Blitz app, and you can still choose to launch Bejeweled Blitz either through its own icon or through the Bejeweled 2 menu, but the new app must be installed. It's essentially a free upgrade to the new version that's faster, prettier, and packed with great features, plus lots more to come!
When you next launch your Bejeweled 2+Blitz app, you will see that the "Play Bejeweled Blitz" icon invites you to "Get Bejeweled Blitz!" Simply tap that icon to download the new app.
I can't seem to launch the new app through the original app! What's wrong?
If your original Bejeweled 2+Blitz app has not been updated in recent months to the most current version, then it will not be compatible with the new app. Since the original app has been removed from the App Store at this time, there is no way to update it. You will still be able to launch the original app to play Bejeweled 2! However, the new Bejeweled Blitz standalone app must be launched separately rather than through the Bejeweled 2+Blitz menu.
My Bejeweled Blitz Coins/scores are different between iOS and Facebook
Since we added greater functionality to the offline mode in Bejeweled Blitz for iOS, it might be a little bit harder to tell whether you're playing offline or connected! If your score or Coin balance isn't consistent between Facebook and your iOS app, you may simply need to connect to Facebook through the iOS app to update your game data online.
Rare Gems
Rare Gems are rare and beautiful gems which you can find and harvest by playing Bejeweled Blitz. Each Rare Gem has its own unique gameplay effect!
Moonstone:
The Moonstone splinters into three fragments and lands in your game board as a trio of Star Gems to start you off! It's like Mystery Gem times three, without the mystery!
Cat's Eye:
After your Last Hurrah has rewarded you for any special gems you had left on the board, Snackers will appear with eyes ablaze to help you score even higher! His multiplier is triple your final multiplier in the game, and each blast from his laser eyes is as powerful as a flame gem detonation! Snackers will rescue a lackluster game or send a great one into the stratosphere!
Phoenix Prism:
The Phoenix Prism captures the light reflected from all the gems on the board, giving it a beautiful rainbow shine. Due to this unique interplay of light and color, the prisms are Wild Card gems, able to be swapped to any nearby pair of gems to create an intense chain reaction, each prism causing a diagonal line of gems to explode.
The Phoenix Prism comes in batches of six gems, but only one gem can shine at any given time! Once you match your first prism, you will see the next light up within moments. Match it quickly to bring out the third! If you don’t use all six within the minute available, don’t worry; you’ll see any remaining prisms working to jazz up your Last Hurrah.
Once all your prisms have burst, and your eyes have feasted on the dazzle of colors, the phoenix himself will appear! (Okay, it could be a girl phoenix; it’s impolite to ask and downright rude to check!) As he takes his final bow and is reborn, a shower of his own feathers falls around him. Whichever feather he catches in his beak will determine the coin bonus you receive on top of the coins already earned in the game. These will automatically be added to your Coin balance.
Blazing Steed:
When you harvest a Blazing Steed Gem, you will begin your next game with Blazing Speed, which causes gems to drop more quickly and turns every match into an explosion! Blazing Speed usually lasts eight seconds, but this special opening lasts ten so you can start out with a bang, a blast, and a ba-boom!
But wait, there’s more. Even after the initial Blazing Speed burst fades, the Blazing Steed continues to make his presence felt. For the whole game, keep an eye on the Flame Gems you match—they’re bigger, better, blazing-er versions of their normal selves, taking out a larger area and earning more points.
Finally, when the clock runs out, a herd of fiery horses will stampede across your gameboard, scattering and detonating extra Flame Gems in a blaze of glory!
Kanga Ruby (NEW to Bejeweled Blitz for iOS!):
Meet the magnificent mustachioed marsupial! The king of kapow! Bruce, the boxing kangaroo! The Kanga Ruby is here to pound gems on your behalf with fists of furry fury! Whenever he appears on screen, a well-placed blow will be delivered to your board, destroying a section of gems.
The Blitzing boxer will turn up to deliver his roundhouses at least three times per game, but you can motivate him to come back even more often by destroying red gems! A Kanga Ruby's favorite gem is red, and as you match these, you will see his meter filling at the top of the board. The more red gems you match, the faster he will return to take another shot!
At the end of the game you will be awarded 100 coins for each red gem you destroyed!
Don't forget to Share your Kanga Ruby at the end of the game! As you share this rare gem, your friends will get to play with evolved Kanga Ruby 2 & 3! (The evolved gems are currently not available on iOS, so be sure to check them out on Facebook!)

Card Multiplier – The Card Multiplier affects all the points you earn from playing cards. Whenever you find a fish, that indicates the card multiplier has gone up by one (from x1 to x2, for example). The maximum multiplier is x9.
Deck – Also sometimes referred to as the Draw Pile, the Deck is where the remainder of the cards are placed after dealing out the Stacks. Play from the deck whenever you run out of moves, but be careful! This pile will run out of cards, and you can only go through it once. On your iOS device, you can draw from the deck by swiping your finger across the screen at any spot or by tapping the deck.

Energy – One unit of Energy is consumed with every deal of the cards. Energy recharges at a steady rate, up to a maximum of 5. Additional energy bought in the shop or received as gifts is stored in a separate bank, drawn from only when your regular energy is zero. Your current energy level is indicated by a meter on the main menu.
Fish – Every time you see a Fish in the game, it means your Multiplier has increased.
Key Card – Two cards randomly placed among the Stacks have ribbons on them, indicating that they are Key Cards. Each key card will unlock an additional build pile for you to play on.
Leaderboard – The Leaderboard displays all of your friends who are playing the game and their highest score this week. Click on the envelope beside a friend’s name to send them a free unit of Energy!
Messages – If your friend sends you a gift, you will find it in your messages. If you have messages waiting, this screen will appear automatically at the start of the game.
Shop – You can buy Energy, Silver, and Boosts in the Shop.
Silver – Silver is the currency of Solitaire Blitz. It lets you buy Boosts for your hand and can also be used to buy some items in the Shop. Your current Silver balance is indicated by a meter on the main menu.
Stacks – The cards are dealt out into seven Stacks at the start of the game. To clear each stack, you must move the cards onto the build piles. Each stack conceals a treasure buried beneath.
Stopwatch – You have just 60 seconds to clear the cards from the Stacks, and the Stopwatch tracks your time.
Time Lines – There are four Time Lines in each hand, at depths of 1, 4, 7 and 10 cards. When you clear all the cards above a Time Line, 20 seconds are added to the clock.
Treasure – Shells, crabs, jewelry, antiques, and many more mysterious things await you on the ocean floor, concealed by the stacks of cards. If you clear all of the cards in a stack, you can pick up its Treasure. The treasures are instantly converted to Silver.
How to Play Solitaire Blitz
The Basics
![]() |
There are four Time Lines in each hand, and each one you uncover adds an extra 20 seconds to the clock. |
How do you get a high score in Solitaire Blitz? Simple! Play fast and make long runs! But everyone approaches this goal a little differently. Here are a few tips to consider:
- Try to make the longest runs possible to get the highest score. Before picking a card, look ahead to the second and third card you might play on it. Sometimes, picking a different starting card can result in a longer run. Of course, the “long run” strategy comes at the risk of taking too much time.
- Try to play as quickly as possible, to beat the time limit and get the most bonus points at the end. Some players imagine a metronome ticking away, and try to play cards as fast as it beats. Others play in quick bursts. While this strategy increases your risk of illegal plays, practicing at “playing fast” can help improve your game over time.
- Aim for the Key Cards first, to maximize the number of options you have for the rest of the game. You often find yourself with two or three alternative cards. If one of them helps you uncover a Key Card, choose that card first.
- Choose cards from deeper stacks over shallower ones and try not to empty any of your stacks too quickly. This way, you have more options and won’t get stuck with one tall stack at the end. Keeping the stacks “balanced” in this way not only gives you a better chance of clearing them, it also helps you uncover Time Lines. Of course, this strategy comes at the risk of finding less treasure.
- Collect rare items to get the most silver. If you see a hint of that telltale glow in the dirt before the deal, aim for it instead of the other stacks. It’s probably worth more silver, which will help you buy boosts in future games.
Boosts in Solitaire Blitz
There are a great variety of game-enhancing boosts to choose from in Solitaire Blitz! Experiment with them, one at a time and in different combinations, and see which earn you the highest scores and the coolest treasures! The boosts that are available for purchase slowly change over time. Some new options are added, and others are retired. If a favorite isn't available today, take the opportunity to try a new combo!
Boosts are purchased with Silver.

There are many treasures under the sea, from shells and crabs to pirate chests and royal regalia. Recovering these treasures will earn you Silver, the standard currency of the seven seas. The rarer the treasure, the higher its value! Silver is what you need in order to buy boosts that will enhance your game. You start on Solitaire Blitz for iOS with 25,000 Silver.
Boosts
Boosts help you win the game and/or get a higher score that you would have earned without them. You have a chance to buy them before each hand. Some boosts are better suited for beginners (like “Extra Time” which gives you another 30 seconds to play). Others are better for strategic players (like “Run Finder” which gives you extra information about what’s underneath the top card). See the Boosts FAQ to learn more about all the possibilities!
Energy
It takes Energy to dive for treasure! You start with 5 units of Energy, and each hand consumes one. Fortunately, as soon as you drop below the maximum, Energy begins to replenish. In a few minutes, you’ll be back up to full.
To help each other out, you and your friends can send free Energy to each other, above and beyond the maximum. Just click the envelope beside their name on the leaderboard to instantly send one unit of Energy per friend per day. Also, extra Energy is always available for purchase in the Shop. Energy that you purchase or receive from friends goes into your “Energy Bank,” where it’s saved until you’re ready to use it.
Banked Energy
Using your banked energy is as simple as clicking Play just as you normally do! There are no extra steps required. If you have no more regular energy available, the next time you play, it will simply draw from your bank instead.
Scoring in Solitaire Blitz
Many factors influence your score in Solitaire Blitz.
-
Cards played – This is the simplest measure! You get points for every card played onto a build pile, and each card's point value increases as your run continues. A run occurs every time you are able to play multiple cards in a row without attempting an illegal move or playing from the draw pile.
-
Cards left – You get points for every card left in the draw pile when you win.*
-
Time left – You get points for every second left on the clock when you win.*
-
Bonus time – When you clear a Time Line, if the bonus seconds from doing so would have advanced the clock past 1:00, those seconds are instead converted to points.
-
Bursts of speed – You get extra points for playing 6 or more cards very quickly. When you play at least 6 cards with less than 0.75 seconds between each move, every card you play at that speed earns you an extra 500 points!
-
Clearing a stack – You get points every time you clear a stack down to zero cards.
-
Bonus moves – You get points for making certain unusual patterns of cards, such as:
Royal Family Bonus = The three build piles show a King, Queen and Jack at the same time.Three Of A Kind Bonus = The three build piles show three cards of the same rank.
Up-Down Bonus = Play six or more cards in a row using just two ranks (e.g. 5-6-5-6-5-6).
Around the World Bonus = Play every card from Ace to King (or King to Ace) without changing direction or breaking the run.
Seven Seas Bonus = Play one card from each of the seven stacks, moving left to right. This is a rare achievement to pull off, so don't forget to brag!
-
Accuracy Bonus – Play your entire game without making a single illegal move.
* Cards and Time left over count only the standard cards and time, not any added by the Extra Cards or Extra Time boosts.
Any points earned in categories 1 or 2 are multiplied by your current Card Multiplier. The Card Multiplier starts at x1 and goes up by one whenever you find a fish. Some fish appear randomly, but you always get a fish when your run reaches 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 cards.
I'm new to Solitaire Blitz! Tell me all about it!
Solitaire Blitz is a fast-paced, treasure-diving solitaire variant. Two decks of cards are shuffled and dealt onto seven stacks, reaching down to the seafloor. Can you clear the cards to win the treasure?
Solitaire Blitz calls on your speed and precision and challenges you to stay cool under pressure! Beat the clock and discover the rarest artifacts of the deep!
Starting out on iOS
When you first install Solitaire Blitz on your iOS device, you will begin with 5 units of Energy and 25000 Silver. You will earn more as you play, and you can purchase more in the Shop.
Already playing on Facebook?
If you're used to playing the game already on Facebook, here are some things you'll need to know to get the most out of the iOS version of the game.
You will go through the tutorial when you first play, even if you logged in to Facebook on the first prompt. Don't worry--it won't take long, and you'll learn about the features specific to this version. For instance, if you were used to the keyboard shortcut of using your spacebar to draw from your deck, you'll be happy to discover the touchscreen equivalent! A simple swipe will draw from your deck.
Your Silver and Energy balances will sync between Facebook and iOS when you log in. If you then continue play on your iOS device in offline mode, perhaps due to losing your active Internet connection, your balance will sync again the next time your Internet signal is strong enough.
Some game data syncs with Facebook, but some is stored locally on your device.
-
Decks
That means you won't have all the decks available on your device that you are used to seeing when you play on Facebook. Unlocking a deck on your device will not also make it available on Facebook. Also, if you play the game on both your iPhone and your iPad, the decks will not sync between the two devices.
-
Win streaks
Since your win streak is stored only on your device, losing a game on the device will not affect your win streak on Facebook! Winning a game on your device won't increase the streak on Facebook either, of course, but it's good to maintain an uninterrupted streak in public, right?! Similarly, if you have multiple devices you are playing on, the streaks will not sync between them either.
System Requirements
Solitaire Blitz iOS requires iOS 4.3 or beyond. It is not compatible with first generation iPads or iPhone 3GS.
The world (and worm!) of Solitaire Blitz
Welcome to the beautiful island home of Solitaire Blitz! It's an idyllic setting for you to start a new career as a treasure hunter! In this peaceful tropical locale, you are one of many trolling the depths in search of rare and valuable artifacts.
Treasure-hunting is so popular here that even local wildlife want to get into the game! You'll find birds, fish, even worms eager to join you on your quest and lend a hand...well, a metaphorical hand. You'll be lent plenty of fins, flippers, tentacles, wings....
Otis the worm is one of your best buddies below the waves! When he swings in at the end of a game, take a moment to click on him to claim your treasure! If you forget to click on "Claim Treasures," don't worry--earned silver is still automatically added as long as you complete the game. But if you don't click on Otis, you won't get to see the values of your discoveries! Another option is to click on your treasures one by one to see their worth.
Otis gets particularly excited for you when you've found especially rare and exotic treasures! When he does a little dance for you, you've uncovered something that would be the envy of your fellow treasure hunters!
Otis' best friend is Pearl, the mermaid, your trusty tour guide through the deep! Count on her to keep you informed of new and important features as you navigate the deep blue sea.

Trouble connecting to Facebook within your iOS game
If you are having trouble connecting to Facebook from within your game, there are a number of basic steps to try.
|
|
Apps are updated regularly, and you will be notified of any available updates via the App Store. On your device, if you see something like this, six of your installed apps have updates available for download! |
To view all open apps, give your home button a quick double-tap. You should see a bar open at the bottom of the screen with your app icons displayed:

You can swipe your finger right-to-left to scroll through the pages of open apps. Yes, there may literally be pages full of them!

3. Restart Your Device
If you’ve followed the steps above and you’re still receiving an error when you try to connect to Facebook, try simply restarting your iOS device. Once the device is restarted, try starting the game and connecting to Facebook before starting any other applications.
4. Reinstall the game
If simply closing background apps or turning your device off and back on has not resolved performance issues with an app, the next step we recommend is to delete the app and reinstall it.
Note: deleting apps will also delete offline progress, so please be sure to backup your data first. You will not lose any online progress, as that is stored on our servers and will be recovered when you connect to Facebook.
|
|
Bookworm Heroes
Pets and their Powers
In addition to selecting your Hero avatar for the game, you can take a Pet with you into battle! Your pet has special skills to complement your playing style. Each pet's special skill can be used a minimum of once per game, but your pets can be energized by using the special quartz tiles, making their skills available for multiple plays potentially!
Your pet's ability cannot be activated on the opening play of a game.
Meet your new friends!
![]() |
Harry the Pecuniary Porcupine Harry doubles the coins you earn for your current play. Save him for words with lots of big-ticket letters and special tiles! |
|
![]() |
Lucy the Berserk Bat Lucy boosts your health based on your word score. She's a great match when your Hero's skill set is primarily offensive rather than defensive! |
|
![]() |
Vonnie the Frosty Feline Vonnie allows you to select one of your opponent's tiles and encase it in ice for one turn. |
|
![]() |
Wiley the Picky Piglet Wiley can change the letter on one of your tiles. Changing the letter does not cause you to lose any special properties associated to the tile you've chosen! It will, however, change the score to match that of the new letter. Wiley's power cannot be used to rescue tiles that have been blotted out by Hamlet. |
|
![]() |
Peggy the Precious Pony Peggy allows you to turn a standard tile into a gem tile! When you engage Peggy and select a tile, a random gem effect will be applied to that letter. She's a great companion when you play against Polyphemus and want to turn a smashed tile into gold (metaphorical gold, that is. She'll turn it into sapphire, quartz, topaz, etc. Just to be clear)! |
|
![]() |
Herman the White Whale Herman can convert a letter tile into an ampersand, allowing you to spell two words in a single turn! There's no better to way to confound your foe than with a compound word! Try him with Razor to make the most of Cyber tiles! |
Tap your pet once to activate his or her power. Tap again to cancel and save the power for another turn. Wiley cannot be cancelled once you have selected a tile for him to change, but you can return to the Main Menu to restart your turn if you want to cancel that action.
The Heroes of Bookworm Heroes
In Bookworm Heroes, you start your game by selecting a hero avatar. Each hero possesses a unique skill set, some defensive in nature, others offensive. Choose the one that matches your playing style and suits your personality!
A hero's special ability can be used once per game. It cannot be activated on the opening play of the game. The flashing orange sunburst under your hero's feet indicates their Ultimate Skill is available and ready for use!
There are five heroes available currently:
![]() |
Lex the Bookworm Lex's signature tile is the Apple tile, which replenishes health when used. Ultimate skill: Eat Your Words! Once per game, use your turn and your tiles to regain a huge portion of health by making as many three- or four-letter words as possible from the letters available to you. In Eat Your Words, your benefit from any special tiles on the board is limited to extra points toward your health, not any additional powers inherent to the gem tiles. |
|
![]() |
Polyphemus, King of the Cyclopes Polyphemus' signature Smashed tile doesn't appear on his own board but on his opponent's! Every turn, Polyphemus will damage random tiles on your foe's board, decreasing their value. Ultimate skill: Tile Driver! Once per game, pound on your opponent's board with the fury of Olympus! Rather than merely diminishing tile values, you will destroy tiles utterly! This skill uses your entire turn, so you will not spell a word. |
|
![]() |
Razor the Cyberpunk Razor's signature tile, the Cyber tile, can only be used in words of 5 or fewer tiles but are worth significantly higher points! This limit is lifted once per game, when your Ultimate Skill is engaged. Ultimate skill: Hack and Spell! Activate the Ultimate skill to hack into your opponent's board and gain access to a selection of their tiles! Steal any letters that will help you spell a great word. Plus, your Cyber tiles can be used in your Hack and Spell play, no matter how long the word is! |
|
![]() |
Hamlet, Prince of Tragedy Hamlet's signature tile is the Inky tile. Like Polyphemus, Hamlet's signature tile is offensive in nature and so only appears on your opponent's board. Every turn, Hamlet will spray ink on the other player's tiles, blotting some out to prevent their use temporarily. Ultimate skill: Sweet Revenge! Want to let your foe know how unimpressed you are with their last play? Activate Hamlet's Ultimate skill to deal insult along with injury! Just make sure you know your play will be superior! |
|
![]() |
Nenya, Elven Princess This sly sprite graces your letters with Flower tiles, which grow in value if you carefully nurture them over the course of three turns. Ultimate skill: Flower Power! Choose your words wisely, using your other letters while the Flower tiles grow green and powerful, then summon a Treant to grow flowers that will greatly damage your foe! |
Tap your hero once to activate his or her power. Tap again to cancel and save the power for another turn.
Special Tiles and Their Benefits
Your starting letters in Bookworm Heroes will always be 16 basic tiles laid out in a 4x4 grid. Each letter's base value is shown at the upper right corner. The values can decrease if the tiles are smashed by Polyphemus, and they can increase if they become special gem tiles! Gem tiles not only have higher values, they carry additional benefits. Your chosen Hero avatar will have a unique signature tile, but most gem tiles are available to all players, no matter which Hero is selected.
Each gem tile automatically doubles the value of the letter on which it appears, unless noted otherwise. Check out what else they can do!
![]() |
Ruby tiles replenish Health when used in a word. |
|
![]() |
Topaz tiles grant you a Bonus Key that will earn you additional coins at the end of the game! Use as many of these as you can to maximize your earnings. |
|
![]() |
Quartz tiles energize a sleeping pet! If you have a quartz tile on the board, make sure to use your pet on the turn when you play that tile, because pet energy doesn't store up. Using two quartz tiles in the same word will not give your pet two turns worth of energy. |
|
![]() |
Emerald tiles increase the power of your attack! Their glorious green is like spinach to amp up your mental muscle! |
|
![]() |
Sapphire tiles are the lucky penny of the Bookworm world! When you spell a word with a sapphire tile, you have a coin flip chance of reusing the tiles to make a second bonus word! |
|
![]() |
Diamond tiles are wild tiles that can be turned into whatever letter you need! And since they don't come attached to a letter with a base value to double, they double the value of the entire word! It may be overcompensation...but it works! |
Head over to the advanced strategy section for tips on making the best use of your heroes, your pets, and your special tiles!
Bookworm Heroes Strategy
Now that you're a Bookworm Heroes fanatic, here are some additional gameplay tips to help you in your quest for dictionary domination!
Getting the most out of your Special Tiles:
![]() |
If you have a quartz tile on the board, make sure to use your pet on the turn when you play that tile, because pet energy doesn't store up. Using two quartz tiles in the same word will not give your pet two turns worth of energy.
![]() |
If you are going to use your sapphire tile, try to plan your second play in advance just in case. While it's a little bit of a let-down when you lose the coin flip and don't get to use your second word, it's frustrating to win the coin flip only to realize you don't have a clue what else to spell with these letters!*
| *Don't worry, you can always just reuse the same exact word if all else fails. But your score is much better if you can find a new word instead! | ||
![]() |
Bonus keys equal bonus coins at the end of the game...but only if you use the Topaz tiles! If your Health is running low, and you might not have too many more chances, look for words that allow you to use your Topaz tiles and collect those keys. Particularly if you feel victory might be out of reach, make the most of your last plays! |
Heroes and their Ultimate Skills:
![]() |
Tempting as it is to use all the letters on the board in Eat Your Words, remember that you don't get the full benefit of the special gems! Don't save his Ultimate Skill for the dire time when you would need to use the full grid of letters just to stay in the game--use it a little earlier, when you're not on the verge of losing; then you can save the best tiles for your comeback play on the next turn! However, if you do choose to use all the letter tiles to maximize the Health you will earn back, don't forget that you can try and retry the word selections as many times as it takes to find the best set of words possible and leave no stray tiles behind! Until you commit your choices by tapping "Eat," you can always return the letters to the board and keep playing with them to make more words! |
|
![]() |
Razor's special ability allows you to make the greatest possible use of her special tiles! While Cyber tiles typically can only be used in words of five or fewer letters, once per game, Hack and Spell allows the Cyber tiles to be used in a word of any length! Since Cyber tiles are so high in value, look to use Hack and Spell when you've got a few of them saved up for a massively high scoring play! Also, there's no harm in activating Hack and Spell on every turn just to spy on your opponent's board and see whether they have anything worth stealing! If you see a Diamond tile, a couple of Topaz keys, some much needed Ruby health, a Quartz tile to awaken your Pet...not only is it worth considering your own need for these tiles, it's also to your benefit to keep your opponent from using them...remember, all's fair in love and words. If you have a lucky Sapphire tile, be very conscious of your word choice! It's probably not a great idea to use a Cyber tile and a Sapphire tile in the same play, because five letters won't give you much to work with if you win the coin flip and have a chance at a second word. (You can always technically spell the same word again, but you'll only get half the points for doing so. Rearranging the letters will always be to your scoring advantage!) |

How to Start a Game in Bookworm Heroes
In Bookworm Heroes, you can play against randomly selected opponents or your own Facebook friends!
If you have signed into Facebook within the game, tap the New Game button and select a friend on your Facebook friends list. Not all of your friends may be shown--if they don't have the game installed, invite them to download it so you can challenge them to a game!
If you don't choose to connect to Facebook in the game, you can play random opponents through GameCenter! Tap New Game, then tap Random. You will be matched up against another player looking for a game.

Tap this icon to return to the game's Main Menu screen at any time.
![]() |
If you don't like the letters available to you, you can always Scramble to get a new set. There is no cost to your coins or score, and it doesn't consume your turn. However, you will lose any special tiles you currently have.
![]() |
You can also Shuffle your tiles to keep the same letters but see them in a new arrangement, which might help you to spot potential words! There is no cost to Shuffle, and it doesn't cause you to lose special tiles.
![]() |
Tap the Help icon to learn more about the game! When you tap it, tool tip will appear all over the screen as question marks, and you can tap them to learn what each icon they highlight represents. |
Abandoned or Expired Games
If you challenge another player, and they do not accept within one week, any coins you spent to select your hero and/or pet will be returned to you.
If a challenge has been accepted, and each player has made at least one move, the game will expire if it has been abandoned. The player who made the most recent move in an abandoned game will receive a refund of coins spent to begin the game, though no coins earned by moves made within an unfinished game will be awarded.
Don't forget, you can "nudge" your opponents if they aren't making their plays! The nudge option will not appear until six hours have passed since the latest activity.

I can't find Stinky the Snail in my Zen Garden!
Since the new iPhone/iPod Touch update to Plants vs. Zombies has brought the Zen Garden to life on that device, we've been hearing from a number of you that you're worried about Stinky the Snail because he's gone missing!
Well, he's not really gone...he's hiding! Stinky is a snail, and roaming that garden for you is a lot of hard work, so he takes little naps behind the flowers. Look closely, and you'll see the little sparklies that give away his hiding place! We also suggest planting all the tall plants like Chompers, Cactuses and Tall-Nuts on the back row so you have better visibility of the garden and Stinky's napping spots.
We've included a couple of screenshots below to point out Stinky's hiding places. Click the thumbnails to see the full versions!
Enjoy the game!

Basic Troubleshooting for iOS Games
If your game is crashing on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, try the steps below:
-
Restart your device.
Your iOS device is a computer, and just like any computer, it sometimes needs to be turned off and on. This simple step will resolve many issues! To power down, press and hold the Power button until the red slider bar appears on the screen. Then drag the slider to confirm you want to turn your device off. Wait a moment before you press and hold the Power button again to turn it back on.
-
Reset your device.
Press and hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time, holding for more than 10 seconds. Don't release until the Apple logo appears.
-
Uninstall and reinstall the game.
Just like your device is a computer, your app is a piece of software, so the same basic steps can be useful. "Uninstall and reinstall" is a simple troubleshooting measure. You can uninstall an app by pressing and holding the app icon until it wiggles, then tap the "x" on it. Reinstalling is as simple as reconnecting through iTunes!
Of course, uninstalling the app will result in the loss of all game progress and user profiles created. It is possible to back up the data through iTunes so that you can restore it. To restore a previously saved state for your apps, connect your device, and open iTunes. Right-click the device's name, and select "Restore from backup."

I can't "Solve the Equation" in Escape Rosecliff Island!
Having trouble with the "Solve the Equation" part of Level 5 in Escape Rosecliff Island? This is a common area of confusion caused by the way our minds process equations versus the order in which hidden object games want us to choose items. We look at "4+6=" and know the answer is "10," and we want to click on the components in that order.
The game, however, considers that the "10" is the missing piece in the mostly complete expression of the equation! If you click on "10" first, then click on "4+6=" to place the "10" where it belongs, you will complete the step!
Here are some screenshots to illustrate:
I've got a black screen on Plants vs Zombies but I can hear the music playing.
If you can hear Plants vs. Zombies on your iPad but not see the game, the simple steps below should help:
- Hold down the HOME button on your iPad to view the running applications
- Close all running applications by tapping and holding down the icons one at a time, then tapping the "-" sign on left corner of the app when they start to "wiggle"
- Launch the game again and you should be able to play!
